Repair works at bridge where cars become airborne in Laois

Cars becoming airborne on Laois bridge

Carn Bridge

Temporary traffic lights are in place at the Carn Bridge until next Wednesday evening.

Laois County Council issued a notification about the temporary traffic arrangements.

The lights will primarily operate as bridge wall repairs are carried out daily on the Carn Bridge wall on the R422 between 8am and 6pm from April 17 to 26.

A recent meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District was told locals are used to ‘the whirr’ sound of airborne cars near the bridge.

Cllr PJ Kelly likened a wall of the bridge on the Emo to Mountmellick Road to a “jigsaw puzzle” due to crash damage.

The council said the work to repair the bridge walls may require occasional 24 hour use of the lights.
