Oakvale Cemetery, Stradbally
The council has agreed to inspect “very dangerous” trees around the perimeter wall of the old cemetery in Stradbally.
Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy requested the move due to concerns about the trees.
“There is an awful lot of big trees along the wall there,” he told a meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
“It is very, very dangerous at the moment…there could be an awful tragedy if something happened,” said Cllr McEvoy.
He tabled a motion asking “that Laois County Council carry out a safety check on trees at the perimeter wall of the old cemetery at Oakvale, Stradbally.”
Cllr McEvoy said if trees did fall they would take down the wall. He said there were a number of graves located just inside the wall.
In a written response to the motion, Laois County Council’s Community Section stated that: “Laois County Council will carry out a check as requested.”
