Plans have been drawn up to make Portlaoise the European HQ for a media company focused religious broadcasting.
Shalom Media Ireland has applied to Laois County Coucil for permission to construct a new recording studio with offices and a chapel at on a site at Lismard Business Park off the town's Timahoe Road.
Engineers acting for Shalom, which is part of an international network, have told council planners that a site has been purchased from Don Morrissey of Lismard Developments.
The council has been informed that if permission is granted, Shalom will build "their European offices and a recording studio onsite". A chapel is also proposed.
The council was also informed that Shalom Media Ireland currently film Mass services from local churches for live streaming. They say the planned facility will be used for recording purposes for 'invited guests' and services will not be generally open to the public.
Shalom Media Ireland is currently renting a premises at the Old Parochial House in Portlaoise.
