Laois councillor blames broadband wires for causing flood at house

A Laois councillor has laid the blame for a flood around a house on broadband installers.

A house on the Cuts Road in Killeshin is facing "a serious issue" says Cllr Ben Brennan.

"On the same day I'm told as the road was being wired for broadband, they ran a wire through a drain and blocked it," he claimed.

"The water is flooding around the house, it's an old house. It soaks in eventually.

"It's only a matter of cleaning the drain and diverting the water," Cllr Brennan said.

He tabled a motion to the November meeting of Graiguecullen Portarlington Municipal District, asking that Laois County Council examine the flooding issue outside the house which he is said is on a lane at the bottom of the Cuts Road.

In answer, area engineer Philip McVeigh said that the council will meet Cllr Brennan on site to identify the works required.

It is one of three houses being flooded in Cllr Brennan's area that he wants action on.

"There is a gentleman further up the road I want you to meet too. The drain got blocked after the road was resurfaced. We'll look at the whole lot," he said.

Cllr Brennan also tabled a motion to ask for an extra gully on the road in Oakley Park, Graiguecullen, "to prevent a house being flooded at this point".  The council will also meet him onsite to view that issue.
