Garryhinch Cross, Portarlington.
Measures are needed on a busy rural road junction on the Laois Offaly border between Mountmellick and Portarlington because of the risk of a road death, a county councillor has warned.
Portarlington-based Fianna Fáil Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick said he wants Offaly County Council's road section to take action at Garryhinch Cross, Portarlington due to a number of traffic accidents in recent months.
The junction is located on the main Mountmellick to Portarlington R423 road.
Cllr Fitzpatrick said he has met with one of the roads engineers from the Edenderry Municipal area.
The councillor said he outlined to him the danger and the possibility of a fatality or serious injury to motorists and pedestrians at the busy junction if more traffic calming measures are not put in place to alert motorist to the danger.
"I will be keeping in contact with the roads section of Offaly County Council to ensure this issue will be addressed," said Cllr Fitzpatrick.
He said he wants more markings and signs at the junction to warn motorists about the hazard.
