Update: Roadworks deadline at busy roundabout in Portlaoise town

The Timahoe road in Portlaoise closed to traffic

A busy roundabout in Portlaoise that connects schools and a major shopping centre to the town, has been closed for almost a month for roadworks, with local concern that it would reopen in time for going back to school.

The Portlaoise retail park roundabout on the Timahoe Road is undergoing work in the first link to build a major new connecting road across to the Abbeyleix road, the Portlaoise Southern Circular Route extension.

The roundabout has been shut to traffic since July 30, limiting driver access to the Portlaoise retail park and Lismard business park.

It also links most of the town's schools teaching over 2,300 pupils, including St Francis School, the Holy Family junior and senior schools 30th, Educate Together NS, Gaelscoil Phortlaoise and Maryborough NS. Many pupils return on Thursday August 30.

Laois County Council has today Thursday confirmed that the roundabout will open on schedule, by the evening of Tuesday August 28.

"The Timahoe Road is on schedule to open in accordance with the dates identified on the Road Closure," confirmed Kieran Kehoe, the Director of Services for roads.

The new southern circular route extension is due to be complete in early 2019, freeing the town centre of traffic and opening new land for development, including the construction of new county Courthouse.
