Footpaths on Smith's Corner junction in Mountmellick have been deemed 'a serious safety concern' by Laois County Councillor Paddy Bracken.
Cllr Bracken tabled a motion that the council lower the path on either side of the junction, in the interest of pedestrian safety.
This motion was seconded by Cathaoirleach Cllr Seamus McDonald.
“There is no drop in the kerb at the top of that junction, and you have to go back 35 to 40 yards to find a drop low enough," Cllr Bracken said.
"That’s not convenient for elderly people walking across. It’s a widely used footpath and there’s a serious safety issue there for pedestrians."
Senior Executive Engineer for Laois County Council's road division, Mr James Dowling, replied that council staff will meet with Councillor Bracken on site to discuss the lowering of the footpath.
"I look forward to meeting you there to address this issue," Cllr Bracken replied.
"There needs more marking at that junction as well," he finished.
This matter was raised at the September sitting of the Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick Municipal District.
