Rathdowney's community garden is located on the Cloghar Centre grounds, and was originally spearheaded by Rathdowney's Men's Shed.

The group cleaned up the garden with the help of Lachlan Delaney, and received a fantastic polytunnel through Laois Partnership Company funding.

Working on site with locals was Tanguy de Toulgoet, founder of Dunmore Country School in Durrow. Mr de Toulgoet is working to inform the public on the importance of biodiversity and sustainable gardening practices.

"This is the fourth week we have been working here," he explained.

"We are replanting the flowers, we have divided the flowers up and are starting to sew some vegetables."

The Dunmore Country School was originally founded in 2009.

"My aim here it is to teach people how to grow food for their own households, not through market gardening. It's all herbs, flowers and vegetables intermixed," he explained.

Also on site was Laois Partnership Company Community Development Worker, Ms Cássia O'Neill.

"The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) supports climate action and community gardens by funding and guiding local projects led by community groups,"Ms O'Neill explained.

"These initiatives promote biodiversity, local food production, and social cohesion while educating participants on sustainable practices.

"Planting and gardening also improve wellbeing by reducing stress and fostering a sense of purpose. By engaging in eco-friendly projects like this, people can build skills, strengthen connections, and create a greener, more resilient future," she said.

The Cloghar Centre, formerly the Convent and Scoil Bhríde National School, is located behind Erkina House on Mill Street.
