Portarlington Garda Station
A petition calling for a full time Garda Station for Portarlington has attracted hundreds of signatures in a matter of hours.
The petition comes just hours after Gardai arrested a man in connection with two armed robberies in Portarlington on Friday evening.
Portarlington Community Development Association and Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins highlighted the issue when they called for full time 24 hour Garda Station for Portarlington in last year.

The latest petition was launched by Portarlington resident, Joey Kennedy, who ran for Fianna Fail in the last Local Elections in 2024.
He said: “As a dedicated member of the Portarlington community, I am deeply concerned about the safety and security of our town and its surrounding areas, including Emo and Killenard. Our residents deserve the reassurance that comes with a constant and robust Garda presence. Currently, the lack of a Garda station that operates 24/7 leaves our community vulnerable and exposed to crimes that could be deterred or addressed more rapidly with a permanent station.
Portarlington has grown significantly over the years, becoming a bustling town with a diverse population. Our proximity to major urban centers has led to an increase in both transient movement and permanent residency. While growth is positive, it brings challenges that our current Garda services, operating on limited hours, struggle to meet. Crimes, emergencies, and incidents do not adhere to a schedule; they can occur at any time of day or night. A full-time Garda Station would ensure a swift response to incidents, improving the overall safety of our neighborhood,” he said.

“In recent years, statistics have shown an upward trend in criminal activities in small towns across Ireland. According to the Central Statistics Office, the incidence of burglary, theft, and anti-social behavior has seen significant spikes in areas lacking a consistent Garda presence. Our community has experienced similar trends, with residents often feeling that prompt assistance isn't available when required,” said Mr Kennedy.
“Furthermore, a 24/7 Garda station would foster greater community engagement, making it easier for residents to report crimes, seek assistance, and engage with Gardaí on community-based initiatives. This engagement is critical in building trust and collaboration between law enforcement and citizens, two essential components for a safer society."

"The solution to our concerns is straightforward: the establishment of a 24/7 Garda station in Portarlington. This station would not only serve our immediate area but also support the security needs of Emo, Killenard, and other nearby communities. It would be a step forward in ensuring that every resident, no matter where they reside, is afforded the protection and peace of mind they deserve,” said Mr Kennedy.
