A Laois senator has met with Minister for Health as part of her campaign for endometriosis care.
Endometriosis is among the most prevalent health conditions affecting women in Ireland, for which currently, there is no known cure. The exact number of women who have endometriosis is unknown but recent research estimates that it may affect as many as one in seven women.
Sinn Féin senator Maria McCormack met with Minister Carroll MacNeill on January 21, calling for GPs to receive training in the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.
“Minister Carroll MacNeill has a very different approach now to what we had previously heard in Dáil debates," Senator McCormack told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
"The endometriosis campaign has had a positive impact. The minister understands that the level of care for women and girls living with this debilitating condition needs to improve drastically.
"The minister has agreed to that there will be GP and consultant training in Endometriosis treatment, with specialised training in radiography, to enable early detection and diagnosis of the condition.
“She has also committed to review the ESAI scheme in terms of adding hospitals in Greece, Italy and Romania. While these commitments are positive this framework is long overdue. We need to see delivery on the ground," Senator McCormack argued.
"Sinn Féin will continue to stand with Endometriosis campaigners to ensure that there is follow through on the promises made, but much more needs to be done and delivered so that Irish women and girls do not have travel abroad for treatment.
"There is a still much more done to have an effective treatment structure across Ireland for women living with this debilitating disease," the Sinn Féin Senator finished.
Senator McCormack has been a longtime campaigner on the issue, having brought party leader Mary Lou McDonald to Portlaoise for her public meeting on endometriosis care.
The senator has organised a movement of women to campaign for increased diagnoses, less wait times and more endometriosis specialist training in the country.
