Roadworks on the N80 at JFL Avenue on February 16 & 17.
Months of traffic delays are on the cards in Portlaoise on one of the busiest urban roads in Laois due to roundabout works on the town's Dublin Road.
Laois County Council has put the public on notice of the work which will be done to facilitate housing, cyclists and pedestrians, public transport and commercial development.
Signs on the road say work to be carried out at the new Rath Rua estate opposite Portlaoise hospital and at the Colliers Lane junction at the Downey's filling station construction site.
The council says the work is due to commence on February 26 and will last for 16 weeks.
The local authority received €500,000 earlier this year for an upgrade of the Colliers Lane roundabout. Explaining why this roundabout is needed earlier this year, the council said earlier this year that the Dublin Road is a substantial residential district in Portlaoise and new measures are required to provide for the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, mobility/visually-impaired road-users, motorists and the needs of public transport services.
“Once provided, the roundabout will facilitate the introduction of additional traffic services in both directions along the Dublin Road. The roundabout will also serve a significant, new commercial development along Dublin Road," said the local authority.
There are in the region of 200 homes in the Rath Rua estate, which is being built by Glenveagh Homes.
The council has previously put the public on notice of almost six weeks of Laois roadworks on the busy N80 Mountmellick Road. A temporary traffic management is in place from the Portlaoise Town soccer club grounds at Rossleighan to the Cedar Clinic roundabout. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

The roadworks started on Monday, February 9, from 8 am to 6 pm daily, and will last until Friday, March 20.
The council explain that the traffic lights are to enable new sewer works to be connected to the new estate being built beside the Cedar Clinic roundabout called Cedar Woods.
The new housing development will provide 50 social homes for Laois County Council tenants, and it is due to be completed by Christmas 2026.
