Laois County Council have announced new drop-in clinics for owners of vacant or derelict properties.

Portlaoise Library will host information sessions for renovating vacant and derelict properties Wednesday July 23 from 10am-4pm.

"Due to overwhelming interest, Laois County Council is rolling out another drop-in clinic to support owners of vacant & derelict properties!" the Council announced.

"Learn about renovation grants, energy upgrades & how to revive unused buildings as part of the Town Centre First programme. No appointment needed—just drop in!" they said.

Organised by the Regeneration Section at County Hall in partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the council says the drop-in sessions will provide essential guidance on property renovation funding as part of the Government’s Town Centre First policy.

The council says attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about available grants and funding and eligibility criteria for the renovation of vacant and derelict properties
  • Speak directly with Laois County Council vacancy & dereliction staff and SEAI representatives about your projects
  • Understand the eligibility criteria and application process for SEAI-supported schemes
  • Receive expert advice on energy upgrades on your property and how to make homes more sustainable.

Laois County Council addresses dereliction through the Derelict Sites Act 1990 and the Vacant Sites Register.

The Council can impose a levy on vacant sites to encourage development and can take action against owners who fail to maintain their properties

In 2023, over 500 vacant and derelict buildings were identified in Laois towns. a Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant is available to help individuals renovate vacant or derelict properties into homes, either for personal residence or rental.

The grant provides up to €50,000 for vacant properties and up to €70,000 for derelict properties. To qualify, the property must have been vacant for at least two years and built before 2008.
