The late Jim Costelloe

Jim Costelloe, Clonaslee passed away peacefully on the 31st March 2023 at the age of 99.

Jim was well known in farming circles throughout Laois and Offaly having been an early member of Laois National Farmers’ Association (NFA) and a founding member of Clonaslee NFA.

The NFA was the predecessor of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and Jim remained active in the IFA until his early 90’s.

His advocacy for his fellow farmers was evident in his strength, belief and commitment to the organisation; and in 2015, he was unanimously elected an Honorary Life Member for outstanding, loyal and long service to the organisation.

Not only was Jim first and foremost a farmer, but he was also an active community man and involved in many developments and initiatives in Clonaslee over the years.

He was a founding member of the Clonaslee Show Society in 1948 and was re-elected Honorary President for Life only a week before his death.

In the early 1950s, a Curate’s House was built entirely voluntarily by Clonaslee parishioners.

Jim and others gave freely of their time and efforts during evenings and weekends to ensure its completion.

He was a founding member of the Clonaslee Co-Operative Society in 1963 and remained on the board until it was later taken over by Avonmore Foods.

More recently, Jim was involved in the establishment of the Clonaslee Community Development Association with the building of the Community Centre being perhaps its most tangible legacy.

From Graigueafulla, his interest in Clonaslee and local life never wavered until the end.

Jim was predeceased by his son Michael in 1982.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Anne, grandson Lorcan, son-in-law Chris Garvey and sister Bernie Hardiman.

He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and in the care of the staff of St. Brigid's Hospital, Shaen. He is also missed by extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

His remains reposing at home on Sunday, April 2 followed by Rosary. His Funeral Mass took place in St Manman’s Church, Clonaslee, with burial afterwards in St. Manman’s Cemetery, Clonaslee.

Jim’s family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support at this difficult time.

May Jim's Gentle Soul Rest in Peace.
