The Laois secondary school formerly attended by Rose of Tralee Katelyn Cummins is bursting with pride for the Rose, with teachers recalling the kindness she displayed towards them and fellow students.

Ms Cummins attended Heywood Community School in Ballinakill, where she played an active role in school life. Principal Eamon Jackman was delighted to congratulate Ms Cummins on her achievement.

“All of us here in Heywood are extremely proud to have played a part in Katelyn's development,” Mr Jackman told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

“From speaking with staff members, they all mentioned her positive contribution to school life. Katelyn was involved within sporting activities and in the musical in 2023.  She is described by colleagues as resilient and mature in her outlook throughout her years in Heywood,” he said.

“She was driven and focused while also exhibiting traits of kindness, sincerity and consideration for fellow students and teachers.  We were very proud of her as a role model for young Irish women in an increasingly challenging world and her strength to follow her own part,” Mr Jackman praised.

“We are simply delighted for Katelyn and her family. We will hopefully be able to welcome Katelyn back to the school at some stage during the year to celebrate her success with the school community,” the principal finished.

Ms Nicoli Reddington, Guidance Counsellor explained that it was a ‘privilege’ to teach the former student. She recalled Ms Cummins’ dedication to paving her own path in life.

“It was a privilege to have taught Katelyn during her time in school. From the beginning she stood out as determined, hardworking, and unafraid to follow her own path,” Ms Reddington said.

“Choosing the untraditional route of an electrical apprenticeship, she showed great courage in pursuing her ambitions and breaking boundaries. It is wonderful to see her success now as the Rose of Tralee — a true role model for our students and we are very proud of her here at Heywood Community school,” the staff member concluded.

Art teacher Ms Sharon Webster recalled the Rose’s artistic talents with pride.

I’m over the moon to see Katelyn crowned the 2025 Rose of Tralee,” Ms Webster said.

“Having had the pleasure of teaching Katelyn in my Art classes, I witnessed firsthand her determination, creativity, and passion. It’s no surprise to see her shine so brightly on stage, and I couldn’t be prouder of all she has achieved,” the art teacher praised.

“I have no doubt she will be an inspiring role model for young women everywhere, and I wish her a wonderful year ahead as the Rose of Tralee ambassador.”

“She represents the skill and ambition of a new generation of apprentices who are building strong careers while breaking barriers and inspiring others.
