The Portlaoise St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is proud to announce that the theme for this year’s festivities will be "Abhaile" - the Irish word for home.
As one of the fastest-growing and most diverse towns in Ireland, the Portlaoise committee says it is choosing to celebrate the universal concept of belonging.
The Committee says that whether it is the traditional "homecoming" of the diaspora, the welcoming of new communities to the town, or the comfort of returning to the heart of the Midlands, Abhaile captures the spirit of Portlaoise in 2026.
"We wanted a theme that resonated with everyone," says Paul Downey, Chairperson of the Parade Committee.
He continued: “Portlaoise is a town that people travel through, but more importantly, it is a place people come back to. 'Abhaile' isn’t just a direction; it’s a feeling of community and connection that we want to see reflected in every float, community group, and costume this March 17," he said.
The committee is calling on local schools, sports clubs, businesses, and community groups to interpret the theme with creativity and wit. From the "Long Road Home" to the diverse cultures that now call Portlaoise "Home," the possibilities for visual storytelling are endless.
