A councillor requested the extension of a 50km speed zone out of Stradbally town.
Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy requested in a motion “that Laois County Council extend the 50 km speed limit on the Timahoe Road, Stradbally”.
“It is just there at the turn into Woodview, it is too near the corner,” said Cllr McEvoy, who wanted to see the speed zone pushed out.
In a written response to the request, a Road Design Engineer said “Road Design will collaborate with the Municipal Area and assess the location. The existing speed limit will be reviewed. Any proposed changes will have to follow the necessary protocol on bye-laws amendments.”

Independent Cllr Aidan Mullins asked what role the Council had in relation to one-off speed limit changes.
Senior Executive Engineer, Tom Drennan said “it has to be undertaken within the speed limit review”. He said this occurs every five years and the next review is due to take place in 2026.
The issue was discussed at the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
