A Laois town is set to have no St Patrick's Day parade this year.

Mountmellick's parade has been organised by a volunteer group in recent years who have announced that it has been postponed until 2024.

Mountmellick Central Hub say a lack of volunteers is among the reasons, in a post on the 'Boglands Festival 2022' Facebook page.

"Due to unexpected circumstances and various reasons including lack of volunteers The Boglands Festival and Mountmellick st patricks day parade will be postponed for 2023 and return bigger than ever before in 2024.

"if anyone would like to get involved or any other Community groups etc would like to host this year's parade we will give every support and guidance we can but unfortunately this year we are not in a position to host the event as there is ongoing issues to be resolved and various planning and arrangements to be considered and completed in very little time," the post reads.

"We have put a deadline of Feb 17th for volunteers to come forward for this year's event if that does not happen we have no choice but to postpone the event until next year with hopes of returning even bigger and better then before Mountmellicks National Celebration is Completely volunteer operated we hope you can understand our position," the organisers wrote.

It was written in mid February with no update since then.

Elsewhere in Laois, Portarlington also has no parade. Parades that will take place in Laois on Friday, March 17 include Portlaoise, Mountrath, Clonaslee, Rosenallis, Stradbally, Rathdowney, Durrow, Spink, Vicarstown, Ballyroan, Timahoe, Graiguecullen and Killeshin.
