The Aghaboe Abbey Preservation Committee works to safeguard the historic Aghaboe Abbey by preserving its structures, heritage, and the stories connected to the site, carrying out voluntary efforts such as conservation work, fundraising, research, guided tours, and advocacy, while also strengthening cultural links – most notably with Salzburg, Austria.
The Committee has enhanced the visitor experience through initiatives like improved signage and heritage promotion in conjunction with the Laois Heritage Officer.
The first-ever Municipal District Civic Reception in Laois was hosted by Cathaoirleach of the Borris-in-Ossory/ Mountmellick Municipal District, Cllr Conor Bergin, and was attended by MD Councillors, Deputy Sean Fleming TD and Ms. Angela McEvoy, Director of Service with responsibility for the district.

The Aghaboe Preservation Committee was represented by Joint Chairmen Mr. Pat Keeshan and Mr. Robert Thompson, and many committee members on the day, including Mr Liam Hyland and Mr Martin Phelan, former elected members.
Cllr Conor Bergin, Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District said: “We are delighted to celebrate 50 years of the Aghaboe Abbey Preservation Committee. For half a century, the Aghaboe Abbey Preservation Committee has safeguarded not just an historic site, but the stories, identity, and heritage that bind our community together. Their dedication has ensured that the legacy of this remarkable monastic settlement endures, preserving its stones, its history, and its spirit for future generations. This golden milestone is a testament to the Committee’s unwavering commitment to protecting a place that continues to inspire pride, connection, and a deep sense of belonging across our community.”
Ms. Angela McEvoy, MD Manager welcomed the honour that has been bestowed on the committee saying: “Communities like Aghaboe Abbey Preservation Committee are much valued in this County due to the contribution they make to ensuring that the heritage of the local area is not forgotten and is there for all future generations to appreciate. During National Tree week, it is fitting that the Committee have been presented with a gift that will grow and flourish within the complex and add to the natural amenity of the area”.
At the reception, Pat Keeshan and, Joint Chairman of the Aghaboe Preservation Committee was presented with a gift of a Yew tree by Cathaoirleach Conor Bergin.
