'Relief no one died' - Residents react to devastating fire in Laois apartment block

Man jumped from third floor while another family escaped with their seven month old baby

Families impacted by the devastating fire in an apartment block in Portarlington are counting their blessings that no one died in the blaze. One resident jumped from the third floor while another family escaped with their seven month old baby. 


It is understood officials are now clearing the entire three storey apartment building in Kilnacourt, Portarlington, called The Oaks which went on fire in the early hours of Thursday morning, February 20. Two people were taken by ambulance to Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise.


Approximately eleven to twelve families have been impacted and are receiving emergency support. The Fire Service is currently working to make the building safe, removing tiles and loose debris from the roof.

Speaking from the scene Leinster Express/Laois Live reporter Eoghan MacConnell said: "The residents are very shaken up. Everyone is relieved that no one was hurt and that no one died. The fire appears to be out. The Gardaí and the fire service remain at the scene and they are working to make the building safe." 


Evacuated residents have been brought to Portarlington GAA club, which was opened up to help, with hot drinks, blankets and support on hand by Laois County Council housing staff and Laois Civil Defence.
