A Garda Superintendent urged people in Laois to report domestic violence incidents.
Garda Supt Eamon Curley made the comments at the latest Laois Joint Policing Committee meeting.
He read the details of the number of domestic incidents recorded in Laois in the first three months of the year. The figures were compared to the first quarter of 2022.
They revealed a slight increase from 128 to 133 calls where gardai attended but no offence was recorded. There were 20 breaches of orders, down from 31 in 2022. In total gardai recorded 154 incidents, down on 159 during the same time last year.
Supt Curley said all incidents of domestic violence are treated as a priority by Gardai in Laois.
“I want to take this opportunity to reinforce and reassure victims that domestic abuse incidents including coercive control continue to receive the highest priority,” he said.
“As a service we would like to encourage anybody who witnesses, or was a victim or has any knowledge of domestic violence or domestic abuse, please report that to An Garda Siochana.
We work with a number of partner agencies including our own specialist units who are there and onhand to provide service and support to all victims of domestic violence,” added Supt Curley.
