Laois householders can drop off old mattresses free in Portlaoise and Portarlington locations

Laois householders wanting to get rid of old unwanted mattresses have two good opportunities coming up this month.

Laois County Council has announced two Mattress Amnesty days this June, where they will accept mattresses at no charge, to take away and be recycled.

The first takes place in Portlaoise Rugby Club, on Saturday, June 20 from 10am to 1.30pm.

The second will be in the council’s new Canal Road Business Park in Portarlington. It takes place a week later on Saturday, June 27, also from 10am to 1.30pm.

The council normally charges €20 per mattress in Kyletalesha Civic Amenity recycling centre, on the Portlaoise Mountmellick N80 road.

There are rules to follow. The amnesty days are for mattresses only, not bed bases. It is for domestic customers only, and all the mattresses must be clean and dry.

The events are paid for by the Circular Economy Fund.

It is the latest action by the council’s environment section to tackle the scourge of dumping of bulky waste in the Laois countryside. Along with mattresses, they have also in the past taken in couches and other furniture.

Kyletalesha Civic Amenity recycling centre is open daily from 8am to 3.30 and on Saturday mornings. See the council’s website Laois.ie for details.
