A section of broken fence beside a crash barrier on a Laois road needs to be replaced, a local councillor has said.

The timber fence installed by Laois County Council over a decade ago is being "tied up" by a nearby farmer trying to keep it repaired, according to Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

He tabled a motion to the March meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking that the council repair a fence on the Ballacolla road, between McCanns house and the old railway bridge.

"There was a crash barrier put there 10 or 12 years ago. The council put in a timber post and rail fence about 45 metres long, it needs to be replaced. McCanns in fairness are trying to repair it all the time, tying it up," he said.

Portlaoise Municipal District engineer Wes Wilkinson said he will meet Cllr Fennelly on site to examine the fencing on the R433 beside the old railway bridge.
