Laois children are being let off a bus near a dangerous junction with fast approaching traffic, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Barry Walsh has highlighted the danger of a "tricky" corner in Ballyroan that could be putting children in danger of getting knocked down.

He tabled a motion on it to the recent September meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

"This is coming from locals. Buses pull up and let kids off. Traffic is coming so fast, they can't see it coming. That corner is tricky," he said.

He refers to Cobbler's Hill, at a junction of the L7771 and R430 roads.

"We need to keep on top of the verges and look for a solution in the long term," Cllr Walsh said.

His motion was seconded by Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

"The verge trimming has helped. Coming down the R430 it's very hard to see. Traffic comes at some speed. Whatever you can do to make it better will help," he said.

In reply, the council said that Portlaoise Municipal District workers had already recently carried out verge trimming works at the junction to improve sightlines.
