LAOIS MOTORING: Short Drives - the MG ZS EV

MG is as most will know a brand that goes back decades Remember the MG Roadster?

However, now the brand is something completely different under Chinese ownership and they have just launched some new EV value models aimed at providing a good package at great value.

Three models are on offer here are the MG5 EV, the MG ZS EV and the MG HS plug-in hybrid. My drive here was in the MG ZS EV.

The styling is good if a little unadventurous and there are four colour options to choose from.  It is powered by a 44.5 kWh battery pack powering a 143 bhp electric motor through the front wheels.  The claimed range of 263 km is a bit optimistic and given some calculations I ran from my drive closer to 200km may be achievable.

Only a full road test will tell all. The interior is actually well finished for a car that is aimed at providing EV motoring on a budget. There is a touchscreen and all the usual basic equipment you would expect.

Out on the open road it gets along just fine. Sure the suspension set up is a bit soft resulting in it bottoming out sometimes on particularly bumpy surfaces and there is a degree of body roll in corners but all is at an acceptable level. Space is good from and back and the boot is really big.

Prices start at €32,995 including grants for the MG ZS EV. Worth a look!
