Two footpaths in Mountmellick have been brought to the attention of Laois County Council, having been acknowledged as safety risks to locals.

Mountmellick Fianna Fáíl Councillor Paddy Bracken has welcomed the Council's decision to replace a dangerous footpath on Parnell Street, Mountmellick.

Senior Executive Engineer Rory O'Callaghan confirmed that these works are currently under way.

“You saw the state of these footpaths, they are in a very bad, bad way, it's right there at the bridge," Cllr Bracken said.

The works that have been done, the road resurfacing along Parnell street and down the road are an excellent iob,

“Everyone is happy with the excellent road resurfacing, the new footpath will compliment these works and save anyone from falling and getting hurt,” he said.

Laois County Council has also recently completed the widening of a section of footpath at Irishtown in Mountmellick.

"It's a great job on what was a very dangerous section of footpath and it's very narrow there, and it sees a lot of pedestrians. I am glad to see it. Well done to our outdoor staff on a great job," Cllr Bracken finished.

This motion was tabled at the October sitting of Laois County Council's Borris in Ossory / Mountmellick Municipal District.
