Key Portlaoise roads that serve schools, shops businesses, and homes are set to close for nearly a week to get a new surface.
Laois County Council has put the public on notice of the closure of the New Road/Well Road in the county town.
The local authority intends to shut the road during business hours from the roundabout junction on the N80 at JFL Avenue to the O’Doran roundabout junction with Southern Circular Road.
County Hall intends to close the section of the road from Monday, November 13 to Wednesday, November 15 inclusive between 8 am and 6 pm.
The Council’s Roads Section is also giving advance notice that resurfacing work is also in store for the Timahoe road from the O’Dorans roundabout to the Meelick road junction.
It will be closed on Thursday, November 16 from 8am to 6pm.
The Timahoe road / New Road / Well Road are used by many shoppers to access the Laois Shopping Centre and Kyle Centre. They also are a key route for parents bringing pupils to five schools on the Southern Circular Route where thousands of students are educated. The Timahoe Road is also a key access road into town. The Southern Circular Route was shut during the Halloween break to allow for the installation of pedestrian crossings.
There has been significant disruption in Portlaoise through 2023 due to road upgrades with the most significant project involving the N77 Abbeyleix Road. Traffic out of the town was also impacted by the work on the N80 between Portlaoise and Mountmellick which also necessitated closure.
