An historic Catholic hall in Laois has been sold for an undisclosed price, after just four months on the property market.

The Catholic Institute hall in Mountmellick, locally known as the Owenass Hall, was advertised on Daft last November priced at €120,000.

A mix of an 18th century two storey building to the front, and a large 1970s dance hall to the rear, it holds many memories for local generations.

It was the spot where the town's first cinema was founded, and countless teen discos and dances since. In recent years it hosted annual bring and buy sales for the town's CCTV camera system.  See photos of the recent sale here.

Mountmellick Parish Priest Fr Micheál Murphy confirmed that a sale has been agreed, to the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

He explained why it was put on the market.

"The parish finance committee decided it was appropriate to let it go.

"There are repairs needed, but it's more because it wasn't in use much in recent years. I know that people have a lot of associations with it down the years. Mountmellick is not short of facilities like that," Fr Murphy said.

He declined to give detail on the sale, or the future possibilities for the building.
