Laois pays tribute to loving father deeply involved in his community

Tributes from far and wide have been paid in memory of a Cullohill man who sadly passed away on December 29.

Clem Whyte from Ballynevin, Cullohill passed away unexpectedly this week, with Laois locals expressing their shock and sympathies with the family.

Mr Whyte was a former chairperson of the Laois Federation of Tidy Towns, and was heavily involved in Cullohill Tidy Towns. The group shared a touching tribute to the local father of three.

"It was with the greatest of sadness that we learnt of the passing of our former Tidy Towns colleague Clem Whyte in recent days," the group stated.

"Clem was instrumental in the reviving of the Cullohill Tidy Towns Group 15 years ago and in addition to the officer roles he held on the committee, he also for a time, held the position of Chairperson of the Laois Federation of Tidy Towns," they said.

"Always on hand to get stuck in, Clem played an important role in many projects including the planting of the roadside daffodils and the removal of the ivy from the Castle Chapel. The Whyte family are very much in our thoughts at this very sad and difficult time. May Clem rest in eternal peace," the group finished.

Dozens of tributes to Clem and the Whyte family have been expressed online.

Clem was described as 'kind, gently, beautiful, funny and intelligent', and is missed by many.

"Clem you were a great man to have known and you will be very sadly missed," one person sympathised.

"Absolutely heartbreaking news to hear of a dear friends passing. May you R.I.P. Clem. Another good one gone to soon. We had some great and memorable times. You will never be forgotten. Heartfelt condolences to all your family at this extremely difficult time," another person wrote.

"Clem was a pure gentleman with a caring soul, and a funny work colleague and will be missed by QME staff," a colleague wrote.
