Traffic light in pipeline for 'very dangerous' Slieve Bloom bridge in Laois
Traffic lights look set to be installed on busy bridge in the Slieve Blooms to make it safe for locals and visitors.
That was the indication given to Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, after he tabled a motion at a recent meeting with Laois County Council.
He tabled a motion calling on the local authority to carry out safety improvement works at Tinnahinch Bridge.
Cllr Bracken explained why action is needed.
“That is a very very dangerous bridge. There was work done but it is a very busy road as well with tourists using it to get to the Slieve Blooms,” he said.
In a written reply, Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, said the bridge is on the list of safety schemes to be delivered in 2023. He said design engineers will examine the configuration of the bridge and the approach roads to develop a suitable solution.
Cllr Bracken asked what the work might entail and if traffic lights would be necessary.
In reply at the meeting, James is Executive Engineer, said all options would be considered and surveys would be needed but added that traffic lights are the likely solution.
The issue was raised at the recent Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District meeting in County Hall, Portlaoise.
