Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union as a “defining opportunity for Ireland and Europe”

Ireland’s assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union is an honour for the country and a defining opportunity to help shape Europe at a pivotal moment, according to Laois TD Willie Aird.

From 1 July, Ireland took on the rotating Presidency for the eighth time, chairing negotiations between Member States, advancing key EU legislation, and representing the Council in discussions with the European Parliament over the next six months.

In a statement, the Portlaoise -based Fine Gael TD said the Presidency comes at a time of significant geopolitical uncertainty, economic pressure and rapid technological change, and presents an opportunity for Ireland to lead with purpose and consensus.

“Ireland has a strong reputation as an honest broker in the European Union. This Presidency allows us to build on that reputation and deliver practical outcomes that matter to citizens, families, farmers and businesses across Europe,” he said.

Dep Aird highlighted the Government’s three key priorities for the Presidency.

“A stronger and more competitive Europe means more jobs, more investment, and more opportunity for Irish workers and businesses. We need to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, support innovation, and ensure Europe remains an attractive place to invest and grow,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of the upcoming negotiations on the EU’s next long-term budget (2028–2034), which will shape future investment in agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, education, research and regional development.

“This budget will be critical for Ireland. We will be working to ensure continued strong support for farmers, rural communities and key programmes that sustain local economies,” he said.

On security, Deputy Aird referenced the ongoing impact of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and growing cyber and hybrid threats across Europe.

“We fully respect Ireland’s neutrality, but we also recognise the need for stronger European cooperation on security and resilience. Citizens expect a Europe that is safe, stable and prepared for emerging threats,” he said. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

Deputy Aird also underlined the importance of protecting European values, including democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

“These values are under pressure globally. Ireland is well placed to stand firmly in defence of them throughout our Presidency,” he said.

He further highlighted key Presidency priorities, including energy security, housing delivery, youth opportunity, digital skills, and online safety.

“We want young people to benefit from every opportunity Europe offers—from education and Erasmus+ to skills in AI, digital technologies and innovation. At the same time, we must ensure children are protected online and that technology companies are held to high standards,” he said.

Dep Aird noted that more than 270 Presidency events will take place across Ireland, attracting over 30,000 delegates and delivering significant economic and cultural benefits to communities nationwide.

“This Presidency is not just happening in Dublin—it is happening in every county. It is bringing Europe to Ireland and showcasing the best of what our country has to offer,” he said.

Concluding, Dep Aird said Ireland’s Presidency will reflect a spirit of unity and cooperation.
