The court was told the man was welcome back at his Portlaoise address

A judge wasn’t satisfied to grant bail to a man who was accused of having drugs valued at €100,000 in Portlaoise.

Limas Kariakinas (49) with an address at Triogue Manor, Portlaoise, is accused of possessing drugs for sale or supply at his address on July 29, 2026.

Solicitor Brian Duffy explained that the address which was fixed for bail was in Triogue Manor but the owners of the property do not want the man to return.

“I would invite the court to admit him to bail,” said Mr Duffy.

Judge Andrew Gubbins said “technically he is homeless”.

Mr Duffy said his client could present to Laois County Council as homeless and they could help accommodate him.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said “the allegation is a large sum of cannabis plants” and without an address Gardai would have “grave reservations about him turning up”.

Judge Gubbins noted the alleged value of the drugs was €100,000.

“Technically he can be released without having an address,” acknowledged Judge Gubbins.

However, he said it was his view that the defendant would have to have an address.

Mr Duffy said if the court wasn’t minded to grant bail there should be an effort to speed up the prosecution.

Judge Gubbins remanded the defendant in custody and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on November 16. “The only outstanding issue is in my view, the address,” he said.
