An unusual request to take away litter bins has been made by a Portlaoise councillor.

The bins are in Marian Avenue housing estate.

Laois Fianna Fáil Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald says that they are being used by people illegally dumping their household waste.

“Unfortunately people, not all from Marian Avenue, are throwing household waste into the bins,” she said.

She tabled a motion asking for four bins to be taken away to the May meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.

It was seconded by Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley who wants to repurpose them.

“I ask if possible that they be relocated to Esker Hills. Recycle them if you don’t mind,” she suggested.

“I’ll take some others,” offered Cllr Barry Walsh.

“Sure we’ll have a raffle,” joked the Cathaoirleach Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

In response, Portlaoise Municipal District officials agreed to remove the bins.

Laois County Council states on its website that “It is an offence to dispose of your household refuse in street litter bins. If you do so, you will face prosecution.”
