The crossing on the Mountrath road in Portlaoise
A railing at a pedestrian crossing is being sought in Portlaoise to stop "young people daring motorists" by coming "straight out" on to a busy road.
Cllr Willie Aird says that the local Gardaí also want the council to take action.
The crossing was only recently installed on what is a rapidly growing side of Portlaoise, the Mountrath Road. It leads from a housing estate to a service station.
Cllr Aird tabled a motion to the June meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking the council to install a "staggered pedestrian guard railing in the footpath in front of the pedestrian crossing at McSorley's Filling Station".
The council has agreed to put the railings in place.
Cllr Aird described the need.
"We have a pedestrian crossing and that is very welcome. The entrance comes straight out. We have young peole daring motorists, coming straight out. The Gardaí said that we need to do something as a council. I look forward to this being installed," he said.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald seconded his motion.
"It was dangerous, I am delighted to see something being done," she said.
