In the interest of public safety, a decision has been taken to close the R440 between Mountrath and Kinnitty ahead of the arrival of the Beast from the East weather system.

Gardaí have told the Leinster Express that the road "is closed until further notice due to the forecasted severe weather event" on its way to the county and country generally.

The road cuts right across the Slieve Bloom mountains and has a tendency to experience substantial falls of snow. The road is closed so as to avoid an emergency situations of drivers or walkers stranded on the route.
