A Laois town is mourning the death of a dedicated teacher and community man.

León De Barra of 31 Sráid an tSáirséalaigh, Móinteach Mílic, / Sarsfield Street, Mountmellick, is being laid to rest on Monday, January 26 following his death on Thursday, January 22.

Mr De Barra was principal of Mountmellick Vocational School for many years, with his former students among the many offering sympathies to his family. 

He was also a lifelong member of Mountmellick Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, and was among the founding volunteers of Mountmellick Credit Union.

Mr De Barra passed away at home, in the company of his beloved wife Esther. He was predeceased by his brothers Micheál and Kevin. He is mourned by Esther, his sons Diarmuid, Niall, León Óg, his daughter-in-law Catherine, his grandchildren Niall Óg and Nóra, his sisters Nóra and Ann, his brothers-in-law Noel, Liam and Pat, sister-in-law Ann, nieces, nephews, numerous friends, neighbours and former colleagues and students.

Mountmellick GAA Club described his great involvement in their club.

"Mountmellick GAA Club wishes to extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Leon De Barra, Sarsfields St, who passed away this week. Leon was appointed Principal of Mountmellick Vocational School in 1967 and retired from the post in 1990 when the school amalgamated with St Mary's College to form Mountmellick Community School.

"Since his arrival in the town in the mid '60's he has been involved in many local organisations, including the GAA. During the 1970s and 80s, he served as Club Vice President, was manager/coach of U-16 and Minor teams, and played a significant role in the development of Acragar Park in the early 80s."

A teacher recalls his great support.

"Deepest sympathy to Esther and Family on the sad passing of Leo. He was a unique educator and was very kind to me in my early years as a young teacher in Laois. May he rest in peace," he said.

A past student also offered sympathy.

"Deepest sympathy to the De Barra family on the death of Mr De Barra. I remember him for his kindness and patience tutoring me in Maths and helping me achieve a fantastic grade. Rest in Peace Mr De Barra".

Mr De Barra's remains reposed in Moloney’s Funeral Home on Saturday with removal on Sunday to St. Joseph’s Church, Mountmellick. Requiem Mass on Monday at 11am. Burial after in St. Joseph’s Cemetery
