Something must be done to tackle a "very dangerous" bend near a popular Laois pub, according to local councillors.
Councillor James Kelly has called on Laois County Council to provide traffic calming measures and signage on the R423 regional road near Deadman's Inn in Ballyfin.
Speaking at the meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory / Mountmellick MD on Wednesday, March 11, Cllr Kelly said that there have been a number of accidents on that stretch of road.
He pointed out that speed is a significant factor when it comes to the danger of the road, however the road also needs resurfacing and more signage to warn motorists about the bend.
Senior Executive Engineer for Laois County Council, Rory O' Callaghan, told Cllr Kelly that the Area Office would survey the existing signage and road markings on this part of the road to determine if any additional measures are required.

However, he noted that if the issue is speed related, then the enforcement of speed limits is a matter for An Garda Síochána and it should be raised with them.
Cllr Kelly agreed that "a fair percentage is driver behaviour" and this is an issue for An Garda Síochána. Although he argued that the council has a role due to the bend being "so acute and the fact that there is a problem with the surface."
The Independent councillor acknowledged that resurfacing works on the road is not included in the 2026 Roads Budget, but said that he would welcome any upgrades to signage to give drivers a prewarning of the dangerous bend.
Cllr Seamús McDonald and Cllr Ollie Clooney supported Cllr Kelly's motion, agreeing that it is a "very, very dangerous area."
Cllr Clooney recounted his own experience with the road, saying he "got a big fright there in the past."
