Rathdowney and the surrounding areas are in mourning following the peaceful passing of Pat “The Doc” Delaney, Coolkerry, Rathdowney, at his sister Carmel’s home on Sunday, February 15.

Pat is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Annie (née Campion), his brothers Denis and Donal, and his sister Theresa. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted sister Carmel, nephews Dominic, Andrew, and Stephen, grandnieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours, and a wide circle of friends.

Rathdowney/Errill GAA Club paid tribute to their former goalkeeper with a heart-felt post on the club's Facebook account.

"Members of G.L.G. Ráthdomhnaigh/Airéil were shocked and saddened, on Sunday evening last, to learn that our former player and one of Rathdowney’s great characters, Pat Delaney, affectionately known as the Doc, had passed away. While this area would be regarded as the “Home of Hurling” we also had some brilliant moments in football, none more so than in the late 60’s. That particular team is remembered fondly for its skill and style, despite lacking the "ultimate prize" of a county final win.

"One of our key performers throughout that period was Pat who donned the goalkeeping jersey with distinction. He was regarded as steady, brave and courageous and the man who often stood between defeat and victory. Throughout his life Pat remained a proud supporter of the Club and County. His easy smile, good humour and kind nature made him a friend to so many.

"On behalf of everyone at Rathdowney and Rathdowney/Errill GAA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his sister, Carmel, and all his family and friends. I am sure the happy memories they have of Pat will see them through what is a sad and difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis," their post said.

Pat reposed at O’Sullivan’s Funeral Home, Rathdowney, on Tuesday, February 17, from 5pm, with prayers at 7pm. Requiem Mass takes place at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Rathdowney, on Wednesday, February 18 at 2pm, followed by interment in the local cemetery. The funeral Mass can be viewed online via the Rathdowney parish website. Family flowers only, with donations, if desired, to Palliative Care, Laois Branch.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis, may Pat rest in peace.
