'Difficult journey' grief and thanks expressed by family of Laois farm accident victim

The late Sean Geoghegan, Ballacolla, Laois.

The grief stricken family of farm accident victim Sean Geoghegan have thanked everyone who assisted them since his sudden death on Saturday, December 13.

Mr Geoghegan, from Clough, Ballacolla was laid to rest on Friday in St Fergal's Cemetery, Ballacolla.

He is survived by his mother Breda, his wife Barbara, children Hannah, Kevin, Jamie-Louise, Clodagh and Aaron, grandson Rian, brothers and sisters and extended family.

The family asked for donations to the Laois based Embrace FARM charity in lieu of flowers.

His wife Barbara's statement read at his funeral in St Canice's Church, Clough on December 19, was fulsome in thanks to all, including emergency personnel, first responders, fire brigade, medical staff, priests and funeral organisers, her neighbours, friends and extended family.

“We are deeply grateful for the care, attention and professionalism shown to our family at such a difficult time.

“To my neighbours, friends, extended family and the entire Clogh Ballacolla community, what do I say, I truly cannot put into words how grateful we are for the support shown to me, the kids, Sean’s family has been over whelming.

“The community means everything, and it has really shown us the strength of this community,” Barbara Geoghegan wrote.

Rev Canon Maher noted that Sean had given his time to young people so they could participate in sports.

“His enthusiasm was infectious for many people and a true enrichment of life,” Rev Canon Maher said.

Items brought to the altar showed Sean’s passion for farming, for gun shooting competitions, for Clough Ballacolla GAA, for music and a photo of his beloved family.

A vote of sympathy was offered to the Geoghegan family at the December meeting of Laois County Council.
