The late Sylvia Mathews.
The death has been announced of the oldest person in Laois, just a fortnight after her 107th birthday.
Sylvia Mary Mathews, late of Station Road Portarlington and of Wilton, Main Street Portarlington County Laois passed away on Tuesday, January 13 2026.
Ms Mathews who was born on New Year's Day, 1919, passed peacefully in the loving care of the staff of St Martha's Ward at St Vincent's Community Nursing Unit in Mountmellick.
Ms Mathews had reached her 107th birthday 12 days earlier on New Year's Day 2026, with a "quiet" celebration held for her with residents, staff and family members in St Vincent's CNU, where she had resided in recent years.
She was the beloved wife of the late Cecil G. Mathews and mother of Stuart and Susan, grandmother of Amanda, Nicola, Charles and Nicholas, great-grandmother to Willow, Isla, William, Imogen, Anders and Theodore.
Her funeral will arrive at St Paul's Church, Portarlington on Thursday, January 22 for a Funeral Service at 2pm. Burial will take place afterwards in the adjoining Churchyard.
