‘Do not use headphones’  - Laois County Council urges e-scooter users to be safe

Laois County Council has issued a series of safety tips for e-scooter users to prevent accidents.  The local authority is urging e-scooter users to follow guidelines, it comes as accidents involving e-scooters are on the rise.


The council urged: "Take weather conditions into consideration. Wet or icy surfaces increase stopping distances and reduce control."Be seen. Wear reflective or high‑visibility clothing as well as appropriate personal protective gear.


"Wear a helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injury in the event of a collision or fall.


"Do not use headphones. Staying alert and aware of surrounding traffic and pedestrians is essential for safe travel.


"Be mindful of others on the road. Share paths responsibly, slow down in busy areas, and give space to pedestrians and cyclists."

The Council is also asking cyclists and pedestrians to prioritise their safety by wearing high‑visibility clothing and making themselves more visible on the roads.


Simon Walton, Director of Services at Laois County Council said: “It is important to look after your safety and the safety of others on the road. Simple steps such as wearing high‑visibility clothing or reflective gear can make a significant difference. We are asking everyone, especially vulnerable road users, to take extra care.”


Laois County Council encourages all residents to do their part in keeping roads and public spaces safe. Increased visibility, responsible behaviour, and mutual respect can help prevent accidents and ensure safer journeys for all.
